When I ran across a third quotation on courage this week (as well as one on bravery), it reminded me of the Cowardly Lion and his wonderful speech about “courage” from the Wizard of Oz.

Cowardly Lion:
Courage.  What makes a King out of a slave?  Courage. What makes the flag on a mast to wave? Courage. What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage. What makes the Sphinx the Seventh Wonder? Courage. What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage. What makes the Hottentot so hot?
What puts the “ape” in ape-ricot? What have they got that I haven’t got?

Dorothy and friends:

Cowardly Lion:
You can say that again.

“What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?”  (Vincent van Gogh)

“Courage is grace under pressure.”  (Ernest Hemingway)

“Without courage, all other virtues lose their meaning.”  (Winston Churchill)

“Bravery  is being the only one who knows you are afraid.”  (Franklin P. Jones)
