Abandoned But Not Forgotten, Number Twenty-One!

October 7, 2013

CracoItalyThis week we travel to Craco, Italy, a town that has been abandoned since 1963 due to recurring earthquakes and landslides.  Craco lies about 25 miles inland from the Gulf of Taranto right in the middle of the instep of the “boot” of Italy.  There is evidence (tombs) that the area had been inhabited as far back as the 8th Century; the town’s name can be connected to the owner in 1060 AD, Archbishop Arnaldo, Bishop of Tricarico, who called the area “GRACHIUM” which means “from the little plowed field.”   If you are interested in finding out more about this Italian “ghost town,” check out these websites: the Craco Society and Craco’s official web page (in Italian, of course).   Buongiorno!
