Trivia in the Kitchen, Number Twenty-Seven!

Every once in a while I will run across a recipe that calls for flower petals as a garnish (most often, rose petals).  Do you know how many flowers are actually edible?  Some of the more common ones include violets, lavender, carnations, marigolds, and pansies.  Did you know that broccoli, cauliflower (duh, flower is in the name), and artichokes are actually flowers?  Did you know that the spice saffron is actually the stamen from the crocus flower?  Who knew?

Here’s a list of edible flowers . . . of course you must always be cautious when cooking with plants to be sure because parts other than the flowers of the plants mentioned in this list may be poisonous.  Happy cooking with flowers!
