Go Green! Go White!

In the Winter 2015 Alumni Magazine, there was an article (by Tom Oswald) entitled “MSU in the top 100 Worldwide.”  According to U.S. News and World Report rankings of the top 500 universities in the world, MSU is among the top 100 universities in the world . . . granted we have a ways to go to catch up with the “top” schools (Harvard, MIT, Cal-Berkeley, Stanford, and Oxford [1 through 5 respectively]), but we made the list.  These ranking mark the first time that USN&WR used a global-scale for their ratings which included a new set of criteria with a heavy emphasis on the schools’ research prowess.  Did you know that MSU ranked . . .

  • 75th in the world?  (Tied with the Netherlands’ Leiden University.)
  • 12th in the world in the field of plant and animal science?
  • 21st in the world for the agricultural sciences?
  • 23rd in the world for economics and business?
  • 27th in the world for environment/ecology?
  • 36th in the world for physics?

And, for some more interesting facts and figures, let’s switch from academics for a moment and provide you with some “Sparty by the Numb3rs!”

  • Helmet size: 10XL
  • Number of fingers: 8
  • Shoe size: 22
  • Average number of annual appearance: 350 (wow, that’s one busy mascot)
  • Number of times he’s been named the National Mascot of the Year by the Universal Cheerleaders Association: 3

Hmm, March Madness is here!  Good luck Spartans, Go Green!
