State Gas Taxes!

Depending on where you live, the amount of tax you pay per gallon on your gasoline can vary greatly.  The tax can range from a low of 8 cents per gallon (Alaska) to a high of 50.5 cents per gallon in Pennsylvania.  Here are the top five states with the highest tax and the top five states with the lowest tax (as of January 1, 2015*) as reported in the April 2015 issue of the AARP Bulletin.

Highest Tax

1. Pennsylvania (50.5¢)
2. California (42.5¢)
3. North Carolina (37.8¢)
4. Washington (37.5¢)
5. West Virginia (34.6¢)

Lowest Tax

1. Alaska (8.0¢)
2. New Jersey (14.5¢)
3. Virginia (16.2¢)
4. South Carolina (16.8¢)
5. Hawaii (17.0¢)
5. Oklahoma (17.0¢)

*rates are rounded up to the nearest 10th of a cent and do not include local option taxes.
