Trivia in the Kitchen, Number Thirty-Nine!

Did you know that the United States Food and Drug Administration (official formed in 1906) began with a single chemist appointed by Abraham Lincoln from the U.S. Department of Agriculture 1862?  The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines,biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), cosmetics, animal foods & feed and veterinary products.The FDA now has a staff of over 14,800 (circa 2010) who test drugs, inspect food, and recall unsafe products.  The FDA is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, and has a budget of $4.36 billion (in 2012).  Additionally,  the agency has 223 field offices and 13 laboratories located throughout the 50 states, the United States Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
