Trivia in the Kitchen, Number Forty-Three!

The Chinese Gooseberry (aka kiwi) is one of my favorite exotic fruits.  Kiwifruit is actually a berry that is produced from a woody vine (when I first observed a kiwi farm during my travels in New Zealand, I thought I was seeing a vineyard).  Kiwis are about the size of a large hen’s egg (2-3 inches in length and roughly 2 inches in diameter).

Over 70% of kiwifruit production is in Italy, New Zealand, and Chile. Believe it or not, Italy produces roughly 10% more kiwifruit than New Zealand; Chile produces about 40% less.  California is the largest producer of kiwi in the United States, but their totals pale in comparison to the rest of the world.
