College Football 2015, Week One!

127The college football season kicked off this week and the march to bowl season and the national championship playoff begins in earnest.  The Michigan State Spartans, who completed their awesome season last year by dramatically defeating Baylor in the closing seconds of the Cotton Bowl and finishing #5 in the final AP poll, began their 2015 season against the Western Michigan Broncos last Friday.  And, while the Spartans have managed to finish in the top-5 the last two seasons, this year marks the first time since 1967 that the Spartans are starting the season ranked in the top-5    The pre-season AP poll has 3 Big Ten teams listed in the top twenty-five (Ohio State [#1], Michigan State [#5], and Wisconsin [#20]).

While the Spartans managed to get a win against Western Michigan, they showed that there were still a kink or two to work out before their first real test of the season against a top-ten team, the Oregon Ducks (#7), next weekend.  The good news for this rematch game from last year: the Spartans will be at home.  Go Green!

The upsets this week included:
Arizona State (#15) losing to unranked Texas A&M.
Stanford (#21) losing to unranked Northwestern.

The close calls this week (games that were won by a touchdown or less) included:
TCU (#2) defeating unranked Minnesota by only six (6) points.
Auburn (#6) defeating unranked Louisville by seven (7) points.
Boise State (#23) defeating unranked Washington by only three (3) points.

Top-25 match-ups won by the higher-ranked team included:
Alabama (#3) defeating Wisconsin (#20).
