College Basketball 2016, Week Nine!

127The Big Ten Conference season is underway as the Road to the Final Four and March Madness begins in earnest.   The Spartans started off on the road and were handed their first defeat of the season at Iowa.  They followed this up with a win on the road against Minnesota.   Despite the loss, the Spartans only dropped to #5 in the current AP-poll rankings.  Iowa entered the top twenty-five this week by posting victories over two top-25 teams (Michigan State [#1] and Purdue [#14])  And, rumor has it that Denzel Valentine may be ready to play later in the week (Sunday) against Penn State.  There are now only two (2) undefeated teams remaining in the top-25:  (SMU, and South Carolina).  The Big Ten currently has four (4) teams in the AP top-25: Maryland (#3), Michigan State (#5), Iowa (#19), and Purdue (#20), .

Next up for the Spartans: their home opener against Illinois (Thursday) then on the road to Penn State (Sunday).  Go Green!

The upsets this week included:
Michigan State (#1) losing to unranked Iowa.
Virginia (#4) losing to Virginia Tech by two (2) points.
Xavier (#6) losing to Villanova (#16).
Butler (#9) losing to Providence (#12).
Purdue (#14) losing to unranked Iowa.
Utah (#21) losing to unranked Stanford by two (2) points in overtime.
Utah (#21) losing to unranked California.
Cincinnati (#22) losing to unranked Temple.
UCLA (#25) losing to unranked Washington by three (3) points in double overtime.
UCLA (#25) losing to unranked Washington State.

The close calls this week (won by six points or less [two scores] or in overtime) included:
Maryland (#3) defeating unranked Penn State by six (6) points.
Oklahoma (#3) defeating Iowa State (#11) by four (4) points.
Purdue (#14) defeating unranked Wisconsin by six (6) points.
West Virginia (#19) defeating unranked Kansas State by four (4) points in double overtime.

Top-25 match-ups won by the higher-ranked team included:
Kansas (#1) defeating Oklahoma (#2) by three (3) points in triple overtime.
Kansas (#2) defeating Baylor (#23).
Oklahoma (#3) defeating Iowa State (#11) by four (4) points.
Xavier (#6) defeating Butler (#9).
