How Is Your Financial Literacy?!

June 25, 2018

Would you like to be more productive?  Would you like to use less sick time? Would you like to have higher morale?  Then it is time to work on your financial stability which has been shown to improve all of these.

Having a savings account is crucial to achieving financial stability.   Save early and save often.  Were you aware that nearly 70% of all American adults have less than $1,000 in savings?  Yikes!  Some strategies for saving include:

  • Pay yourself first (have savings taken straight out of your check and have enough saved for 3-6 months worth of expenses in case of an emergency).
  • Plan for major purchases and set the money aside.
  • Plan for your retirement (know in advance how much you will have).

Having a budget can also help.  Prioritize your expenses and have a plan for your spending.

Be “credit conscious.”  Do you know your credit score?  You should really check it once a year.  Did you know that  . . .

  • only 38% of people know their credit score?
  • 52% of adults haven’t checked their credit score within the last year?
  • credit scores range from 300 to 900; the average score is around 700?
  • your credit score is calculated based upon a variety of factors (weight)?
    • credit mix (10%)
    • payment history (35%)
    • amounts owed (30%)
    • new credit (10%)
    • length of credit history  (15%)

Get your debt under control.

  • 76% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.
  • the average American household owes $135,000 in debt (mortgage, car payment, credit cards, student loans, etc.)
    • the average student loan debt is currently $37,172.  Yikes, again!

Happy Saturday!  We may be on the downside of the winter season (and spring is officially a little more than a month away), but we are smack dab in the middle of the Winter Olympics so here is a great infographic that shows the number of calories that can be burned by the various Winter Olympic sports.    Hmm, snow shoveling made the list . . . I wasn’t aware that this was an Olympic sport.  Enjoy!
