The Spartans managed a victory at home over Rutgers (Wednesday) then fell on the road to Penn State (Saturday).  Despite the loss, the Spartans are tied for first in the Big Ten (with Minnesota, Purdue and Nebraska, each with only one loss so far at this early juncture in the season). Hang on, it could be a wild ride this year.  The Big Ten only has three (3)  teams currently in the AP top-25: Wisconsin (#13), Purdue (#20), and Indiana (#25).  And, the number of undefeated teams among the top-25 has dropped to two (2): Baylor (#1), and  Gonzaga (#5).

College Basketball 2017, Week Nine!

January 2, 2017

Now that the college football season is nearly over (the final game [championship game] is next Monday — Alabama versus Clemson), it is time to divert our attention to college basketball . . . where we will pick up the action in week nine.  There are currently only three (3) undefeated teams remaining among the top-25 at this early juncture in the season: Villanova (#1), Baylor (#4), and  Gonzaga (#7).  The Spartan’s non-conference schedule was positively brutal (4 top-25 teams, we lost all four) and the numerous injuries certainly hasn’t helped them much either.  But the conference schedule got underway this week on the road against Minnesota and at home against Northwestern. The Spartans were able to eke out a come-from-behind win (by one (1) point) in overtime against Minnesota followed up with a victory in their home opener against Northwestern later in the week. The Big Ten only has three (3)  teams currently in the AP top-25: Wisconsin (#14), Purdue (#15), and Indiana (#16) — it could be a down year for the Big Ten.

Next up for the Spartans: a couple of home games, Rutgers (Wednesday) and Penn State (Saturday).    Go Green!

The upsets this week included:
UCLA (#2) losing to Oregon (#21) by two (2) points.

November 27, 2016

The regular season is drawing to a close . . . and the Spartans were once again over-matched against #7 Penn State.

There are only two unbeaten teams remaining (Alabama and Western Michigan) and the Big Ten Conference has five teams in the CFP rankings (four in the top-10):   Ohio State [#2], Michigan [#3], Wisconsin [#6],  Penn State[#7], and Nebraska [#16]. But following the Michigan/Ohio State  and other games this weekend, this may change (we’ll know on Tuesday evening).

Next up for the Spartans: No one, our season is over.  We’ll see what 2017 brings.   Now, on to college basketball where the Spartans have already  had their share of challenges in November.  Go Green!

College Football 2016, Week Twelve!

November 20, 2016

The Spartans played a great game, made a lot of Ohio State fans nervous, but fell a two-point conversion short of defeating the #2 ranked team in the country!  Alas!  All eyes are now on next week’s match-up between #2 Ohio State and #3 Michigan.  We shall see how the playoff picture changes (if at all) on Tuesday evening.

There are only two unbeaten teams remaining (Alabama and Western Michigan) and the Big Ten Conference has five teams in the CFP rankings (four in the top-10):   Ohio State [#2], Michigan [#3], Wisconsin [#7],  Penn State[#8], and Nebraska [#18].

Next up for the Spartans: on the road to visit the Nittany Lions of Penn State.   Go Green!

College Football 2016, Week Eleven!

November 13, 2016

The Spartans have finally won a Big Ten game today against Rutgers!  Woohoo!  Unfortunately, with Ohio State and Penn State the last two games of the season, it may be their only Big Ten victory . . . but I will remain hopeful.  After this weekend of upsets (five top-ten teams lost), there are now only two (2) teams who remain unbeaten (Alabama and Western Michigan). And while the Big Ten Conference has five teams in the CFP rankings (four in the top-10):   Michigan [#3], Ohio State [#5], Wisconsin [#7],  Penn State [#10], and Nebraska [#19], these should change a bit this week.

Next up for the Spartans: at home against the Buckeyes of Ohio State.   Go Green!

Michigan (#3) losing to unranked Iowa by one (1) point.

Nebraska (#19) defeating unranked Minnesota by seven (7) points.

The Wait is Over!

November 12, 2016

Even though the Michigan State Spartan football team has been having a bit of a down year (okay, more than a bit), yesterday marked the official start of the Men’s NCAA Basketball season and had the Spartans (#12) facing off against the Wildcats of the University of Arizona (#10).  Unf0rtunately, the Spartans fell to the Wildcats (by two points).  Alas.

The Spartans have a brutal non-conference schedule which includes possible games against other ranked opponents (Kentucky, Louisville, and Duke), and that’s just in November.

And, we have already had a couple of upsets in college basketball: UConn (#18) losing to unranked Wagner and Kansas (#3) losing to Indiana (#11).  The Madness has begun and it’s not even March yet!  It is going to be a great basketball season.

Go Green!

College Football 2016, Week Ten!

November 6, 2016

And the skid continues . . . yet another loss for the Spartans (that’s seven (7) in a row — the longest losing streak since 1982).  Alas.  Well, the first College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings were released this week . . . Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, and Texas A&M were the top four.  There are only five (5) unbeaten teams remaining (Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Washington, and Western Michigan) and the Big Ten Conference has five teams in the CFP rankings (four in the top-10):   Michigan [#3], Ohio State [#6],  Wisconsin [#8], Nebraska [#10], and Penn State [#12].

Next up for the Spartans: at home against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (and the battle for the basement in the Big Ten East).   Go Green!

Alabama (#1) defeating LSU (#13).

College Football 2016, Week Nine!

October 30, 2016

The Spartan skid continues with their loss to the University of Michigan yesterday.  And, the number of undefeated teams continues to shrink.  There are now only five unbeaten teams remaining (Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, Washington, and Western Michigan).  The Big Ten Conference has five teams in the AP top-25 rankings:   Michigan [#2], Ohio State [#6],  Nebraska [#7], Wisconsin [#11], and Penn State [#24], but some of these may change slightly following yesterday’s games.

Next up for the Spartans: on the road to face the fighting Illini of Illinois.   Go Green!
