College Football 2017, Week Two!

September 10, 2017

This week, there continue to be four Big Ten teams in the top-25 (Ohio State [#2], Penn State [#4],  Michigan [#8], and Wisconsin [#9]) and the Big Ten had another great week posting a 10-4 victory-versus-loss record.   The big surprise of the day had Ohio State (#2) losing at home to Oklahoma (#5).  And, it wasn’t a top-25 game, but Iowa was able to defeat Iowa State in double overtime! The Spartans managed another early season victory by defeating the Broncos of Western Michigan University.  Despite the Broncos’ lack of offense, they were able to score defensively on a scoop and score as well as on special teams with a kickoff returned for a touhdown.  Next up for the Spartans, a bye week, then at home against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in two weeks (9/23).  Go Green!

The upsets this week included:
Ohio State (#2) losing to Oklahoma (#5).

The close calls this week (games that were won by a touchdown or less) included:
Georgia (#15) defeating Notre Dame (#24) by only one (1) point.
Washington State (#20) defeating Boise State by three (3) points in triple overtime.

College Football 2017, Week One!

September 3, 2017

Following last year’s dismal showing (1-8 in the Big Ten, 3-9 overall), coupled with the off-field issues that have occurred recently, the Michigan State Spartans are looking to regroup this year.  Regardless of which pre-season poll you wish to consult, there are four Big Ten teams in the top-25 (Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Michigan).    All in all, a great weekend for the Big Ten this weekend as they go 10-3 in their opening week games (and the three losses were to top-25 teams).  The Spartans began their season hosting the Falcons of Bowling Green State University yesterday and had no trouble handling the Falcons to start their season with a win!  Woohoo!  And there was even an upset of a top-25 team on this first week of the new season as Texas (#23) fell to unranked Maryland.  Let the fun that is college football, and the journey to the final four playoff teams, begin.  Next up for the Spartans, at home against the Broncos of Western Michigan.  Go Green!

The upsets this week included:
Texas (#23) losing to unranked Maryland.

The close calls this week (games that were won by a touchdown or less) included:
None this week.

Top-25 match-ups won by the higher-ranked team included:
Alabama (#1) defeating Florida State (#3).

College Basketball 2017, Week Eighteen!

March 6, 2017

Well, the Spartans continue to struggle on the road — what a horrible way to finish the regular season — losing to Illinois by only three (3) points, and then losing to Maryland as well by only three (3) points in the closing seconds (a last-second basket by Maryland).  Major bummer of a week for the Green team!  It was no real surprise that Kansas took over the top position in the rankings and the Big Ten only has two (2)  teams currently in the AP top-25 : Purdue (#16) and Wisconsin (#22).  What a dismal showing this year by the Big Ten.  Most of the major conferences wrapped up their regular season this week which means that championship week starts now!  It is officially March, let the Madness begin as we continue in earnest down the road to the Final Four!  By this time next week we will know the participants and the seedings of this year’s NCAA Tournament.  MSU is currently projected as a #10 seed (thank you Joe Lunardi), but we’ll still have to wait and see; a couple of wins in the Big Ten Championship Tournament would go a long way to solidifying a Spartan presence at the dance.  Woohoo!

Next up for the Spartans:  a Thursday game in the Big Ten Tournament where they will face the winner of Wednesday’s matchup between Penn State/Nebraska . . . .    Go Green!

College Basketball 2017, Week Seventeen!

February 27, 2017

What a happy week for Spartan fans.  The Spartans had a couple of home games this week and they found a way to win both of them!  They won easily on Thursday against the Cornhuskers of Nebraska, and had a positively awesome game against the #16 Badgers of Wisconsin (yesterday afternoon).  Woot!  The Big Ten only has three (3)  teams currently in the AP top-25 (but this could change later today since all three had losses this week): Purdue (#14), Wisconsin (#16),  and Maryland (#24).  Following the  Gonzaga (#1) loss over the weekend, who will be the new #1?  Villanova (who also lost)?  Kansas?  Can you tell it is almost March?  Let the madness begin!

College Basketball 2017, Week Sixteen!

February 20, 2017

The inconsistencies continue for the Spartans  — they won earlier in the week (Ohio State) but lost on the weekend (Purdue).  And with just four games remaining in the regular season (two against ranked teams), this trend could continue.  The good news: both games this week are at home (which means both games next week are on the road).  Alas, a bit of a down year. The Big Ten continues to only have three (3)  teams currently in the AP top-25: Wisconsin (#11), Purdue (#16),  and Maryland (#23).  Undefeated Gonzaga (#1) continues its #1 ranking and would probably have to lose in order to get bumped out of the top position.  March Madness is right around the corner . . .  are you ready?
