The “sandwich” was purportedly created in 1762 by John Montagu (the 4th Earl of Sandwich), who asked for meat between bread while he played cards (allowing him to eat while playing cards without getting the cards greasy from eating the meat with his bare hands). And, with the advent of sliced-bread (thanks to the Wonder Bread company), the sandwich has since become a staple of the American diet.  Do you have a favorite sandwich?  (BLT for me, who knew?)  What has been the most unusual sandwich you have ever made?

Did you know . . . that Roman emperors were so fond of asparagus, they wrote poems about it and maintained an “asparagus fleet” to quickly ship the vegetable from the fields when it was in season?  Asparagus was sent to the Alps by chariot to keep it frozen for six months until the arrival of the Feast of Epicurus.  It took me a while to acquire the taste for asparagus, but every year I would look forward to the fresh harvest of rhubarb (and strawberries, of course) — Mom’s strawberry/rhubarb pie was exceptional!  Is there a seasonal food that you anxiously anticipate each year?
