Let’s Explore the Zodiac Signs!

August 1, 2019

Before we begin any serious discussion, let me tell you that there are three main but different ways of identifying the dates of the zodiac signs: the Constellation Zodiac, the Tropical Zodiac, and the Sidereal Zodiac.

  • The Constellation Zodiac: is defined by the boundaries of the numerous constellations and the approximate dates the Sun enters and leaves the 13 constellations that touch the ecliptic.
  • The Tropical Zodiac (this is the one I grew up with): is defined evenly based upon 30 degrees of arc along the ecliptic, these signs were named after 12 of the constellations and are defined by the changing of Earth’s seasons.
  • The Sidereal Zodiac: begins its yearly cycle when the sun aligns with the constellation of Aries, then divides the ecliptic into 12 equal sections of 30 degrees each.

The Tropical Zodiac is the most popular of these, so this is what I will be using moving forward.

LeoToday, August 1st, happens to fall in the middle of 5th astrological Zodiac sign, Leo . . .

  • Duration: between July 23rd, and August 22nd.
  • It spans the 120th to 150th degree longitude.
  • A northern sign (Aquarius is its opposite, southern sign).
  • Zodiac symbol: Lion.
  • Constellation: Leo.
  • Zodiac element: Fire.
  • Zodiac quality: Fixed.
  • Sign ruler: Sun.
  • Detriment: Saturn and Uranus.
  • Exaltation: Neptune.
  • Fall: Pluto.

Necktie of the Month – July 2019!

July 1, 2019

Sorry, not this month.  It was bound to happen sooner or later . . . I have reached the point where I have no “new” neckties to highlight this month . . . horrors!  I posted my very first (inaugural) “Necktie of the Month” back in September of 2008, and have religiously posted a new necktie from my collection each month until today!  So, until I manage to acquire some new neckties, I am going to have to find alternative material to fill this void.  Starting next month, I will explore the world of the Zodiac (for at least the next year).  But stay tuned, you just never know when the next “necktie of the month” will appear, it just will not have the same regularity as that over the last several years.

Happy Autumnal Equinox!

September 23, 2011

Summer is officially over as we welcome the first day of Fall!  The September equinox occurs at 4:04 AM Central Daylight Time (CDT).  Equinoxes (March and September) fall on the halfway point between solstices (December and June), and occur when the center of the sun is directly over the equator; the lengths of day and night are roughly equal everywhere in the world.

Today also marks the first day of the seventh sign of the Zodiac — Libra.  The key strengths of Libras are: diplomacy, gracefulness, peacefulness, idealistic, and hospitable.  The key weaknesses: superficiality, vanity, indecisiveness, and unreliability.  (Source: http://zodiac-signs-astrology.com/zodiac-signs/libra.htm.)  Libras seek fairness, peace, and harmony in all things.  Can you say “ohmmmm?”

Libra is also the first half of the word “librarian” (how’s this for free association?).  A mere coincidence?  Probably, but humor me, please.

Happy Autumn!  Happy Friday!

It’s A Sign!

December 5, 2010
Whether or not you believe that the position and relationship of the sun, moon, stars, and planets has any bearing on your personality, you probably still know what your astrological sign is.

The standard zodiac contains twelve constellations and is divided into twelve equal segments. Each astrological sign represents one of the segments. The signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.  These are the signs that we’re all familiar with, even if we don’t know what each represents.   Personally, I’m not overly interested in astrology, but were you aware of a thirteenth sign?  Have you ever heard of Ophiuchus?

ophiuchus

\oh-fee-YOU-kuhs\, noun, genetive -chi

1.  the Serpent-bearer, a constellation on the celestial equator between Libra and Aquila.

The ancient astronomer Ptolemy included Ophiuchus in his list of 48 constellations. (It used to be referred to as Serpentarius, which has the same meaning.) It is still one of the 88 modern constellations.

Standard astrological zodiacs do not include Ophiuchus, but here’s a chart which shows where it would fall (between Scorpio and Sagittarius) if you wanted to consider including it in your calendar.
