Today marks the birth of the French painter, Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (who also goes by Gabriel Jacques de Saint-Aubin), in Paris in 1724. In addition to painting, de Saint-Aubin was also a draftsman, printmaker, and etcher. He was fond for observing and capturing the Parisian social life and entertainment first-hand from the street. These works provide a valuable record of eighteenth-century life in Paris. Two of his brothers (Charles Germain de Saint Aubin and Augustin de Saint-Aubin) as well as his niece (Marie-François, the daughter of Charles) were also artists.
