College Football 2023, Big Ten Championship!

December 3, 2023

Congratulations are in order for the University of Michigan for winning the Big Ten Championship game. The Wolverines offense and defense (recovered three fumbles) seriously outclassed the hapless Hawkeyes of Iowa in a 26-0 shutout.

Well, the Spartans did NOT appear in this year’s Big Ten Championship game, but WE HAVE A COACH for next year and beyond — Jonathan Smith (formerly of Oregon State). I like his motto: “low ego, high output.” Let the future begin and let’s see where this new ride will end (we have lost a lot of players to the transfer portal already, including all three scholarship quarterbacks [yikes], so Coach Smith has his work cut out for him).

Next up for the Spartans: the 2024 season. Go Green!

There are currently four (4) Big Ten teams among the AP top-25: Michigan (#2), Ohio State (#6), Penn State (#10), and Iowa (#18).

The upsets this week included:
Georgia (#1) losing to Alabama (#8) by three (3) points. Alabama is the SEC Champion.
Tulane (#17) losing to SMU (#25). SMU is the American Athletic Champion.

The close calls this week (wins by a touchdown or less or in overtime) included:
Washington (#3) defeating Oregon (#5) by three (3) points.

Other top-25 losses this week that weren’t upsets included:
Michigan (#2) defeating Iowa (#18). Michigan is the Big Ten Champion.
Washington (#3) defeating Oregon (#5) by three (3) points. Washington is the PAC-12 Champion.
Florida State (#4) defeating Louisville (#15). Florida State is the ACC Champion.
Texas (#7) defeating Oklahoma State (#19). Texas is the Big-12 Champion.

College Football 2023, Week Thirteen!

November 26, 2023

The Spartans played on Black Friday this weekend, at Ford Field (where the Detroit Lions play), and were routed by Penn State. And so ends the dismal season of the Michigan State Spartan football team. We will now divert our attention to the basketball team (who has also had a bit of a challenging start, so far).

Next up for the Spartans: hire a new coach and rebuild for 2024. Go Green!

There are currently four (4) Big Ten teams among the AP top-25: Ohio State (#2), Michigan (#3), Penn State (#11), and Iowa (#20).

The upsets this week included:
Ohio State (#2) losing to Michigan (#3) by six (6) points.
Louisville (#9) losing to unranked Kentucky by seven (7) points.
Kansas State (#19) losing to unranked Iowa State by seven (7) points.

The close calls this week (wins by a touchdown or less or in overtime) included:
Washington (#4) defeating unranked Washington State by three (3) points.
Alabama (#8) defeating unranked Auburn by three (3) points.
Iowa (#20) defeating unranked Nebraska by three (3) points.
Oklahoma State (#21) defeating unranked BYU by six (6) points in double overtime.

Other top-25 losses this week that weren’t upsets included:
Oregon (#6) defeating Oregon State (#15).

College Football 2023, Week Twelve!

November 19, 2023

The Spartans win again! This was a road win where Michigan State had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Even after going ahead with less than 1:30 to go in the game, the Hoosiers marched down the field and missed a field goal that would have force overtime. But hey, a win is a win (I’ll take it).

Next up for the Spartans: at home to face the Nittany Lions of Penn State University. Go Green!

There are currently three (3) Big Ten teams among the AP top-25: Michigan (#2), Ohio State (#3), and Penn State (#12).

The upsets this week included:
Utah (#16) losing to Arizona (#19).
North Carolina (#22) losing to unranked Clemson.

The close calls this week (wins by a touchdown or less or in overtime) included:
Michigan (#2) defeating unranked Maryland by seven (7) points.
Louisville (#9) defeating unranked by Miami seven (7) points.
Missouri (#11) defeating unranked Florida by two (2) points.
Oklahoma (#14) defeating unranked BYU by seven (7) points.
Kansas State (#23) defeating unranked Kansas by four (4) points.

Other top-25 losses this week that weren’t upsets included:
Georgia (#1) defeating Tennessee (#21).

College Football 2023, Week Eleven!

November 12, 2023

Yet another embarrassment for the Spartans. This week, we were on the road to face the Buckeyes of Ohio State and were overmatched from the git-go.

Next up for the Spartans: on the road to face the Hoosiers of Indiana University. Go Green!

There are currently three (3) Big Ten teams among the AP top-25: Michigan (#2), Ohio State (#3), and Penn State (#9).
